Google Drive alternative: WispFile compared

By the WispFile team · Updated 24 September 2026

Google Drive is storage first: sharing a large file means uploading it into your 15 GB of free space, which Gmail and Photos share, and it stays there until you delete it. WispFile hands files over directly without storing them, so there is no quota to fill and no copy left behind, as long as you stay online while they download.

Key facts

  • Google Drive: cloud storage with sharing.
  • WispFile: direct, browser to browser, never stored.
  • Both are free to start; WispFile needs no account.
  • WispFile needs you online while they download.

Competitor details checked 24 September 2026 on each company’s own site; sources are linked below. Plans change, so check theirs before you rely on a limit.

When Google Drive is the better choice

  • You and the recipient will keep working on the files together
  • The files should stay available for months

When WispFile fits better

  • The file would fill your free 15 GB, which Gmail and Photos also use
  • You want to hand files over, not store another copy in the cloud

How the transfer differs

With Google Drive: uploaded to your Drive, then shared and downloaded. With WispFile, your browser and the recipient’s connect directly, and each 256 KB piece is encrypted with AES-GCM under a 256-bit key that lives only in the link, then checked by the recipient before it is written to disk. A dropped connection resumes where it stopped. Free links are direct only; some office and mobile networks block that, and paid plans add a relay that stores nothing.

Switching from Google Drive

  1. Open wispfile.com: no account needed.
  2. Add the files or folder you would have uploaded.
  3. Share the link the same way you shared the Google Drive link.
  4. Keep the tab open until the recipient has everything.

Frequently asked questions

Is WispFile a good Google Drive alternative?

For handing files over while you are online, yes: nothing is uploaded or stored, there is no size cap, and files are end-to-end encrypted with a key WispFile never sees. If the recipient will download later while you are offline, Google Drive or another upload-based service is the better fit.

Is WispFile free?

Yes. Direct transfers are free with no size cap and no account. Paid plans add an encrypted relay for networks that block direct connections, plus link names, branding and team features.

Does the recipient need an account or app?

No. They open the link in a browser and download. Nothing to install on either side.
