How to send large files internationally

A direct transfer works between any two countries: the file goes from one browser to the other over the internet, with no server in between to upload to. What slows it down is the slower of the two connections and, over long distances, the route between them. What stops it is a network that blocks direct connections.

Before you send across borders
- Send a small test file first. If it connects, the big one will too.
- Agree a time if you are in different time zones; you stay online while it downloads.
- Use the faster network available, such as office fibre over mobile data.
When the two networks cannot connect directly
Some internet providers, especially mobile carriers, share one public address between many customers in a way that blocks direct connections. Like all internet traffic it crosses networks between the two ends, encrypted end to end. It is not stored anywhere on the way.
